My Nativities are what I am most known for. I
make them of any and all ethnic groups of people
and also do the more traditional styles.
This is my simple New Mexico Pueblo Nativity
with Wise Men or Kings, from other tribes living
close by, a Hopi from Arizona, a Navajo and a San
Juan Pueblano.
Take the angel away and it is just a gathering of
tribal neighbors.
New Mexico ZUNI Pueblo Nativity Set
This set contains the interior of a simple Pueblo room
made of mud and painted white with logs lining the
ceiling and covered with dried chiles for use in cooking.
There are two katsina figurines hanging on the wall, the
Zunis’ revered Shalako and a Mud Head. There are
folded blankets for sleeping at night stacked on the floor.
The Holy Family is from Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico, and
they are the only other group to carve katsinas (also
spelled other ways, such as kachina), as the Hopi do.
(Well, the Navajo carve them, but only for sale.) There
is an Angel, Mary, Joseph and a Shepherd holding a
small lamb. Jesucito lies on a blanket with the four
directions on it, he lies in the circle of the sky.
Mary and the Angel wear traditional woven dresses.
They have long sleeved blouses under those dresses,
wear woven red belts and their legs are wrapped for
warmth, modesty and beauty. They both have flowered
shawls.
The first Wise Man is a Hopi in black pants, a short
sleeved blue shirt and a white head wrap. He brings the
Hahai-i Wuuhti, a cradle katsina for the Holy Child. She
reflects my life. He also brings a woven platter of the
turtle and a pot with insects painted upon it.
The second Wise Man is Navajo, a silversmith from
Shiprock. He kneels with a Two Grey Hills simplified rug
with his gifts of a squash blossom necklace, a wrist
arrow guard, a bowl of corn pollen and a skein of wool.
He wears the traditional velvet long sleeved shirt circled
by a silver belt, long pants and traditional moccasins. A
cloth wraps around his forehead.
The third Wise Man is from San Juan Pueblo, which is
a trading center for all tribes in the area. He wears a
beige shirt with matching pants with a silver belt, dark
moccasins, earrings, a bracelet, rings and necklace
similar to the Navajo Wise Man. He wears his hair in a
bun, wrapped with cloth. His gifts are mostly traded, a
black bear fetish, a clay pot, and a blanket with jewelry
on it.
The accessories include a sleeping dog, a sheep, a hen
on a nest and a bowl of her eggs, platters of tamales,
bread, fruit and meat. There is also a bowl of corn.
