| CRUZANDO FRONTERAS A NATIVITY SCENE BY APRIL ROMO DE VIVAR So many people misunderstand our border region and the people who stand on both sides of it, looking at each other across an ever widening divide. I love the people on both sides of this border and so, I make a meeting of border crossers as my central figures in this nativity scene. This time the Americans must cross into Mexico to meet this new child. The physical scene is an old business in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, a cave (La Caverna) that was a restaurant and bar for many decades and is now gone. It represents the once thriving and now suffering and dying businesses on both sides of The Wall, El Muro. Maria and Jose and the Angel have walked from their Indian pueblo homes in Oaxaca, Mexico, a lovely and fascinating and suffering place, and they have made it as far as the border with Arizona and they cannot go on, are not allowed to go on. Mary is very, very tired and Joseph is very protective of her and the Angel prays for us all, with her arms out and mouth open. Baby Jesus loves people and he is really enjoying this gathering on his birthday. He is turning sideways to look at Linda Ronstadt, who is bent over singing to him. He knows that it is his job to teach them all to love and to help each other unconditionally. The Magi, Wise Men, or the Three Kings are the late Morris King Udall, Joel Valdez and our Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup. Cesar Chavez, Isabel Garcia, John Huerta, our ex-governor Raul Castro, Emiliano Zapata, the Reverend John Fife and Raul Grijalva are also in the scene. The figures are about 6" to 8.5" tall and they stand at the cavern opening. Inside there are lights, a fur bed, a chiminea for fire building and wood, eggs, tortillas, a metate and corn to grind. Joseph's tools for working in America are with him and so are their hats for walking in the sun and their small cloth bag of possessions. The interior looks very warm and toasty because I truly feel bad when some nativity sets have the family looking chilled to me. There is food laden, handmade furniture, music and love all over the scene. There are also extra sarapes for the guests who feel a chill, as I sometimes do. Click on Linda's picture above to visit the stories and faces of my other attendees at Jesucito's birthday party. That is my nativity scene. It may not make the sense to you that it makes to me. You have just read why I made it, or most of my reasons. I hope that you liked looking at it. It is for sale, because I make my living making nativity scenes. One of mine is in the permanent nativity collection of the National Cathedral in Washington, D. C. The newspapers have written about this nativity scene and Telemundo Television is going to do a small piece about it on their news, I believe. |
