This figurine of
the Reverend
John Fife was
created using an
online photo of
him praying in
the desert. I did
not faithfully
recreate his scarf
as I didn't want
the Baby Jesus
to see the
crosses on it and
become
frightened.
The Reverend John Fife is there in the nativity, adding a
sense of Sanctuary and Life, or No More Deaths, to the
scene. These are the names of the movements associated
with him in Arizonans' minds and hearts.

I used to write stories about 70 year old American retired
couples driving their RVs around the country, stopping at
state borders and being asked if they had any contraband
in their RVs and having them answering that they only had
8 Guatemalans, 4 Nicaraguans and 3 Mexicans and a
partridge in a pear tree in the back.

The laughing border officer always waved the old couple
on, shaking his head at their joke and the 8, 4 and 3
hidden riders inside the RV let their collective breaths out
at the same time as the Sanctuary Movement RV moved
on, saving them from certain death back home.

Some people start movements and others participate in
them and others just read about them. The Reverend Fife
starts them or facilitates their birth, as it were. He is a good
man to emulate, if you need examples of what kind of a
human being you should be.

I just asked myself, “Who would Jesus invite?” and went on
from there. The Reverend is at the gathering to say a
blessing for all of the people.

He also holds the pull string of a toy chickie on wheels. It is
his gift for the Baby Jesus. We call Mexican border
crossers "pollos", chickens, and so, the Reverend thus
asks Jesus to care for them.
