Raul Castro is in the
nativity scene
holding a stuffed
animal, a pinto pony
named Chula, his gift
for the Baby Jesus.
When I met him I was
a child and he was a
Juvenile Court judge
and my dad was a
reporter for The
Citizen Newspaper
on the court beat.
What a compassionate, intelligent and empathetic man he
was at that time, and he remains so every time I see him.

When he let my crazy father, Bob Stirling, drive one of Mr.
Castro's  "Castro Pony Farm"  ponies home from River
Road across town to Swan and Broadway in our V W Bus,
(she was a lovely mare named Chula) and let us keep her
for a few weeks, well, he jumped right to the top of this
child’s Most Fabulous People List and stayed there.

I remember him in levis and boots and talking softly to
rowdy miniature stallions. I thought of him as a movie star
and he has lived that kind of a romantic and exceptional a
life, I think.

President Kennedy made him an Ambassador to El
Salvador, or recognized his value and used the best man
for the job, I think. He was our Arizona State Governor,
too, one of the better looking ones, ahem. And, to me, he
has always been one of the handsomest men in the whole
Western United States.

All of that aside, he is an example for all boys who want to
know what kind of man to grow into. And, his relatives
were immigrants just like all of ours were, too.

He still gets stopped and disrespected by the Border
Patrol. Life amazes me.
