Mayor Bob Walkup
My Wise Man
The Magi, Wise Men, or the
Three Kings are Morris King
Udall, Joel Valdez and our
Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup.
The third Wise Man is our personal Tucson visionary, our
Mayor Bob Walkup. He set the visual theme for this nativity.
People come from other places and they have other ways
of seeing what we have looked at for decades and maybe
never have seen. Our mayor is a man like that. Our mayor
not only gets us all to work together, even when we don’t
want to, but he has fun doing it. He has been known to don
a Mariachi outfit and grab a guitar and play along to this
new music, new to him, that is.
I have dressed him as a Mariachi in this nativity scene, to
show how we can learn from each other, emulate each
other and do good things together. His gift a probably one
of the small cars or motorcycles that he restores, the
perfect gift for a new baby boy.
His unseen gift is his Vision of our Southern Arizona,
specifically Tucson environment, our physical, business,
social and cultural environment. And, he is in the scene to
show that even snow bird-like immigrants can teach and
learn.
The Mayor could not play his guitar alone, so I made him
part of a trio. Each Mariachi is dressed in a different color
to show that they don’t play for the same groups, but that
they can play the same good music together when called
upon to do so. The Mayor wears a chocolate brown suit
with a pink bow tie. He is one of the rare men who can pull
off a pink Mariachi bow tie.
