Isabel Garcia came to serve the people at my nativity
scene, mostly to help the Holy Family. In real life she was a
Legal Defender and received death threats for her beliefs.

My mother wanted more women in the nativity scene and I
chose Isabel, though many people would not like to have
her at the gathering, I think that the Baby Jesus would like
her there.

So, Isabel must stand for all women who see injustice and
speak up, for women who know what is right and demand
some action on our part to correct things or to not let things
slide downhill unnoticed.

She represents those who can take the heat and should
not have to do so alone. She is the voice of the voiceless.

She represents the water of life, wearing blues. I put a
cooling and soft woven desert scarf on her back. Our
summer deserts are unmerciful on the people who must
walk and work in them, so she brings my prayers of kinder
gentler deserts into people’s lives.

She holds mugs of precious water and serves them,
serves us.
On Isabel Garcia's
woven sweater shawl
is a blue and lavender
Arizona desert. There
are sweet flowers and
there is lots of water for
all who walk there.

She was always in her
business clothing and I
wanted her to have a
moment of relaxation.
