Emiliano Zapata
Mexican Revolutionary
The two men who play
with him in his trio are
my idea of The
Shepherds for this
nativity scene.
One no longer lives and
one lives and works
among us and for us
each day. They both
shepherd us, care for
us and look out for our
well being.
The other Shepherd and back up Mariachi is the one who
plays his music, the old songs, for the masses every day,
even though he died decades ago. He is dressed in black,
representing sorrow to me and I made him very dramatically
handsome, as was his message in his day. He plays the
violin, very symbolic in so many ways and his name is
Emiliano Zapata, el Caudillo del Sur.
Where to start with his story? You have to read a little
Mexican history to know about his part in the Plan de Ayala,
“Libertad, Justicia y Ley”.
He was born poor like most people, educated himself about
his world, saw the wrong and tried to right it. He worked
tirelessly.
People use his name and memory and words today. Some
people in Mexico call themselves “Zapatistas” as the
holders of his unfulfilled promises. Good and ill are done in
his name.
He knows why his people find themselves at the American
border. !! Viva Mexico !!
